Sheffield school teacher Charlotte Hay wins special award for inspirational work

An inspirational Sheffield primary school teacher has been presented with a mentoring award during a graduation ceremony at Hallam University.

Charlotte Hay, who is a teacher at Oasis Academy Watermead in Shirecliffe, won the Inspirational Mentor Award for her work in supporting and mentoring trainee teachers, helping them to make the transition from education to work.

Charlotte was handed a framed certificate and an award at the ceremony, held at Sheffield City Hall.

Charlotte said: “I’ve mentored many trainee student teachers from Sheffield Hallam University over the years at Oasis Academy Watermead and it is an absolute pleasure to watch, support and encourage them all to grow and develop in their teaching practice and confidence as they enter teaching profession.

“It was an honour to have been nominated and to have won this prestigious award.”

She continued: “I was invited to a prize-giving ceremony where I was awarded my certificate and awards and then I was given the amazing opportunity to be part of the graduation ceremony at Sheffield City Hall and be part of the academic procession with the faculty leaders and other inspirational professionals from the university celebrating the newly-qualified teachers.

“It was such an amazing day and one I will remember forever.”

School principal Adam Dawson said: “I am immensely proud and delighted with her achievements.

“Charlotte’s efforts and commitment she has offered to young professionals has been excellent.

“She is a credit to the team at Oasis Academy Watermead and has supported many of her colleagues.”

The school, which has been rated ‘outstanding’ by inspectors at Ofsted, is part of Oasis Community Learning multi-academy trust.

Its website says that it is proud to be Sheffield’s first School of Sanctuary, “committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all, especially those seeking sanctuary”. Watermead has also won national recognition for its commitment to diversity and equality for pupils and staff.
