Sheffield pupils learn vital life skills thanks to emergency services in South Yorkshire
The Year 6 pupils from Mosborough Primary School visited the Lifewise Centre, in Rotherham, on Tuesday, January 7, to take part in the Crucial Crew programme run jointly by South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
During the day-long school trip they took part in eight workshops at the interactive learning facility studying everything from first aid and fire safety to how to conduct yourself on a bus and cross the road.

Year 6 teacher Victoria Sanderson said: “The children absolutely loved it, it really provoked a lot of thought from them and they had reflections on the day afterwards. These are skills we can’t necessarily teach in the classroom and it's a message that needs to come from members of the police and fire service as I think they listen more as they have the real life experience.”
Lifewise is a scenario-based learning facility and features a film-set environment built to look like a typical street in order to deliver education in a realistic setting.
The programme is available for all Year 6 pupils in South Yorkshire and extends to Special Educational Needs schools, Pupil Referral Units and Learning Centres.

Simon Dunker, Head of community safety at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the role the Lifewise Centre plays in making South Yorkshire safer and stronger. Children are incredibly powerful advocates of fire safety in the home, which is why it’s so important that nearly 97 per cent of all Year 6 pupils in South Yorkshire visit the film-set style centre for an unforgettable learning experience every year.”
