Spike Fullwood, who is in Year 5 at Totley Primary School, is currently competing in the Youth Climbing Series (YCS) in which young climbers, who are categorised by age and gender, battle it out to become UK climbing champions.

The ten-year-old has already aced his rounds so far, having taken part in two of the four regional rounds, and is hoping to place in the top three competitors from the Peak and Midlands region to secure a place at the final in April.

Inspired by their friend’s success, a group of Y5s and Y6s from Totley Primary School, along with Spike, also recently took part in a climbing competition at The Climbing Works, near Millhouses, where they pitted themselves against a series of climbing obstacles and scored points depending on how far they got.

Totley Primary headteacher Ben Paxman said: “Everyone at Totley Primary School is so proud of Spike and the achievements he’s making in climbing. He’s such an inspiration, and the success he’s seeing is testament to the hard work and determination he has put into the sport since he was a very young boy.

“We look forward to seeing how he continues to progress over the years and we’re sure he’ll do himself, his family and the school proud.”

Spike was introduced to climbing at the earliest possible age as both his parents are climbers and has competed twice in the Boys Youth E category at the YCS, last year placing first in the regionals and first in the finals which were held in Sheffield at the Depot and Awesome Walls facilities.

He enjoys climbing in the Peak District, as well as indoor climbing at The Climbing Works where, at just five-years-old, he joined a climbing group and now trains between two and three times a week.
