Sheffield Hallam pays touching tribute after long-serving staff member dies from coronavirus

Sheffield Hallam University has has confirmed the death of a long-serving member of staff due to coronavirus.

The staff member, who has not been named, worked in the Facilities Management team “for a number of years”, a University spokesperson confirmed.

The person is not believed to have contracted the virus while working on campus, the spokesperson added.

Richard Calvert, deputy vice-chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, said: “Everyone in the University community is deeply saddened to learn that one of our colleagues, who worked in our Facilities Management team, tragically passed away over the weekend of 24 October.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and friends at this time.”

There were 597 coronavirus-related deaths registered in Sheffield as of 16 October, the latest date for which reliable data is available.

The city’s infection rate was 408 per 100,000 people in the seven days to 30 October, with 2,388 positive cases during this time.
