Sheffield design student's work celebrates the festive season

Graphic design student Bradley Thompson created a Christmas themed coffee cup as part of the design competition brief set by The Sheffield College.

The 19-year-old’s winning design features a red mug sleeve decorated with Christmas trees, candy canes, gingerbread men and Santa Claus.

This is now displayed on the cup sleeves of hot drinks served from the college’s coffee shops and has also featured in a social media advent calendar campaign run by the college’s marketing team.

Bradley, who is based at Hillsborough Campus, said: “I’m over the moon at winning, as the quality of work from the other entries was really high.”

He added: “I aimed to create a minimalist, simplistic look with symbols that we all relate to at Christmas. I put a lot of time into it so it’s a great feeling to see the final design on the cups.”

The festive competition is open to students completing the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design) course.

Bradley’s ambition is to go on to study graphic design at university. He added: “I’m passionate about the subject and I’m really enjoying my course. I’d like to thank my tutors Kelly and Andy for their encouragement and support.”

Kelly Edwards, Course Leader at The Sheffield College, said: “Working to a brief helps our student develop the skills they need to go further in their careers. This year’s standard of entries was very high. Congratulations to Bradley on his success.”

Hillsborough Campus is The Sheffield College’s creative hub which houses custom-built facilities, including Mac design suites, art studios, industry standard games design software and workshops.

There are also workshops to allow students to explore their creativity and develop skills in various areas including screen printing, metalwork and pottery.
