Inspectors from the education watchdog visited UTC Sheffield’s city centre campus, on Matilda Street, last month.

In a report, published on March 16, they gave an overall ‘good’ rating, saying that leaders have put in place a “well-thought-through” curriculum which is built around the college’s specialist subject and allows pupils to study a broad range of subjects.

The quality of teaching was described as “strong”, with inspectors praising teachers for using questions “skilfully” to check what pupils have understood in lessons.

Pupils in the sixth form are said to be “impressive” role models for younger pupils and ambition for all is “high”, while those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) told inspectors that they felt their needs were well met but a small number of parents feel the college could do more.

Inspectors said leaders have the skills necessary to back up their aspirations for the pupils and noted how they have started making reading a priority, especially for those who join the college with lower reading skills.

The report added: “A particular strength of the school is the relationships it has forged with local employers in the fields of the school’s specialisms.”

Alex Reynolds, Principal, UTC Sheffield City Centre, said: “To gain such positive recognition from Ofsted is hugely rewarding for everyone involved with the UTC. Our top priority is developing the next generation of engineers and creatives so desperately needed by local and national employers.

“We are really proud of our students and our staff, and their commitment to striving for technical excellence, as part of a broad and balanced curriculum that offers a high quality learning experience backed by employers.”

To further improve, UTC Sheffield City Centre must build on the work they have already done to make reading a priority in order to “rapidly boost” boys’ reading skills on arrival at the college.

Inspectors said pupils with SEND would achieve more if the provision for SEND was included in the college’s quality insurance processes, therefore leaders must ensure that the required reviews are completed and must continue to focus on attendance to improve it further.
