Doncaster school one of 50 in UK chosen for Government's £1 billion upgrade

Scawsby’s Ridgewood School has been selected as one of only a handful of schools from across Britain to receive the cash – and the announcement has been described as ‘incredibly exciting news’ by the school’s new headteacher.

In a letter to parents, Andy Peirson wrote: “Last summer, the Prime Minister announced a £1 billion package for the upgrade of school buildings.

"I am really pleased to be able to inform you that Ridgewood School has been selected as one of 50 schools to benefit from this building programme.

“This decision was only confirmed yesterday so the details are very limited at this time. What we can say is that this is incredibly exciting news for the school community and will result in significant investment in improving the learning conditions for our students. We will receive more information over the coming months and will keep you informed of the developments.”

Last summer, Boris Johnson promised the huge cash injection to rebuild schools over the next decade.

Construction is expected to start on the projects in September 2021.

The government has also said it will provide £560 million for refurbishing existing school buildings, with £200 million set to be spent on repairs at further education colleges.

The major funding package was the first allocated to rebuilding schools since 2014.

At the time, the PM said: ‘As we bounce back from the pandemic, it’s important we lay the foundations for a country where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, with our younger generations front and centre of this mission.

‘This major new investment will make sure our schools and colleges are fit for the future, with better facilities and brand new buildings so that every child gets a world-class education.’

Education secretary Gavin Williamson said: ‘Replacing and upgrading poor condition school and college buildings with modern, energy-efficient designs will give our students and teachers the environment they deserve and support them to maximise their potential.’

The school recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
