Devonshire Green protest planned in support of downgraded A-level students

Activists are being asked to bring a facemask, a protest sign and their ‘anger’ to a demonstration in support of A-level and GCSE students at Devonshire Green on Friday.

A-level students across the country were left shocked on Thursday to find their results had been downgraded below teacher’s predicted grades by exam watchdog Ofqual.

Nearly 40 per cent of A-level assessments by teachers were downgraded - according to official figures published on Thursday morning.

The ‘unfair’ marking system has already sparked a protest in Whitehall while the Labour Party have called on the Government to change course and reverse the decision.

With many sixth formers now unable to attend their university of choice more than 8,000 former Cambridge and Oxford students have made calls for every one of the universities’ colleges to make all their 2020 offers unconditional.

Hundreds have backed the calls on Twitter with accompanying hashtag #honourtheoffer.

Writing about the Sheffield protest on Twitter teacher and councillor for Park and Arbourthorne Ben Miskell posted (SIC): “Young people shouldn’t pay the price for this government’s #COVID19 failures.

“That’s why universities need to #honourtheoffer & make sure that those from state schools aren’t disadvantaged this year. Join those protesting in Sheffield on 21st Aug at 1pm”.

The Friday event begins on Devonshire Green at 1pm.
