Doncaster Racecourse bosses 'delighted' to welcome back racegoers after lockdown easing

Last night, it was announced that outdoor sports venues will be allowed to re-open from May 17 – as long as a series of tests are met.

In a brief statement, bosses at Town Moor said: “Following the government’s announcement of a roadmap out of lockdown, we’re delighted to anticipate the return of racegoers in the near future.

"More information will be available soon.”

Moves to bring spectators back at Doncaster Racecourse

There have been not spectators at the venue since September, when Doncaster was used to run a pilot scheme for bringing back crowds at racecourses, as part of a Government backed plan.

The project was initially intended to run for all four days of the St Leger Festival.

But it was scrapped after the first day because of concerns over rising infection rates in the borough at the time.

Under the Government’s plans announced last night, it was said that outdoor venues would be allowed an attendance of 4,000 people or half-full, whichever is the lower.

1,000 people or a half full venue will be allowed at indoor venues from May 17.

It is not clear at this stage how the announcement will impact on outdoor concerts due to be held at Town Moor in 2021.

Shed Seven are due to perform on May 15, Kaiser Chiefs on June 26 and Jess Glynne on August 14.
