Police said concerns had been raised about vehicles, described as a white Volvo and a red van, slowly approaching dog walkers in the Stocksbridge area on Monday, February 8.

PCSO Carol Raynes, of the Sheffield Central and North West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “As far as SYP are aware there has been no thefts or attempt theft of anyones dog, it seems at this time it is suspicious behaviour.

"That said, it is recommended that you be vigilant when walking your dog, keep it close to you on the inside if walking on the pavement.”

South Yorkshire Police recently said reported dog thefts had risen over the last few months.

Its advice to owners includes never leaving your dog tied up unattended, ensuring your pet is microchipped and the registered details are up to date, and not allowing strangers to have their photo taken with your dog.
