Last night, two men, including one armed with a hammer, raided the Co-Op on Gleadless Road, Gleadless, and attempted to steal a cash box.

Two men, aged 24 and 33, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with the raids.

Temporary Detective Inspector Andy Shields said: “We are currently keeping an open mind whether these three incidents are linked, but that is one of our lines of enquiry.

“Detectives are reviewing CCTV and carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those responsible. Neighbourhood officers will also be continuing to offer reassurance to the premises.

“Thankfully no-one has been injured, but the shop workers involved have naturally been left very distressed by what has happened.

“I’d like to ask anyone who witnessed these incidents to contact us. Do you live nearby? Did you see vehicles acting suspiciously or leaving the scene? Did you see anyone running away from the premises? Have you heard something about the incidents that might be useful for our investigation?

“I know it can take courage to speak to us, but it’s important that you do.”
