The 26-year-old forward, who arrived in a deadline day loan switch from the Rams last year, suffered a long-term injury at the outset of Tony Pulis’ reign as Owls boss and was sent back to his parent club for treatment.

Marriott is understood to have been training with Wayne Rooney’s side for a number of weeks and was expected to stay on there, with Derby struggling alongside Wednesday towards the bottom of the table.

Cardiff centre-half Aden Flint was signed on the same day as Marriott and played only four matches for the Owls before he too suffered an injury that saw his loan terminated. Last month Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri hinted that both players would return to their parent clubs.

But The Athletic have reported that Derby have chosen not to exercise a recall clause in the deal and that Marriott will return to Wednesday imminently. The two clubs are the lowest-scoring in the Championship with Derby having scored 14 in their 22 matches and Wednesday 15 in 23.

Marriott started four matches at Wednesday as he sought to build-up his fitness under Garry Monk, coming off the bench in three more, but has yet to score for the club.

It is unclear when exactly Marriott is likely to return to S6. It was confirmed yesterday that Wednesday’s next two matches have been suspended due to their ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Their Middlewood Road training ground remains out of bounds.
