A dad has revealed how he wrapped his daughter in a curtain and lowered her to safety from a burning block of flats in Sheffield.

Salar Omar, his wife Saz and 18-month-old daughter, Julia, were in their home on Batemoor Road, Batemoor, when a fire broke out last night.

Flames were shooting out of a window in one of the flats, which was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Concerned for their safety, Salar wrapped his young daughter in a curtain to keep her safe as he lowered her to people on the ground below.

Three residents were rescued by firefighters and others climbed down ladders to escape as flames and smoke filled the block, trapping people in their homes.

Three men are in police custody today after being arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

South Yorkshire Police said all the residents in the flats escaped unharmed.

The force said: “Officers were called to reports of a fire at a flat on Batemoor Road, Sheffield, at 8.45pm last night.

“It is reported a middle floor flat had deliberately been set on fire.

“South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue attended and controlled the fire, and evacuated residents from the flat above and below. Nobody was injured.

“Three men have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

“A scene remains at the flat while enquiries continue.”

The block of flats are cordoned off and under police guard.

A crime scene investigation team is examining the block.
