From The Full Monty to Doctor Who and Kes, South Yorkshire has featured on the big and small screen more often than you might realise
You may have seen film and TV crews near you in Sheffield, with two big new projects being filmed right now.
Shooting has started for the big screen biopic Giant, featuring Pierce Brosnan and telling the rags-to-riches story of Sheffield boxing great Naseem Hamed and his legendary coach Brendan Ingle.
They are just the latest in a long list of movies and TV shows which have been filmed around Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
From smash hit comedy The Full Monty and its recent TV reboot to Doctor Who and classics like Kes and the still-haunting apocalyptic drama Threads, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster have featured on the big and small screen more often than you may realise.

Giant, a new film reportedly being shot around Sheffield and Leeds, tells the rags to riches story of Steel City boxing great Naseem Hamed and his relationship with the legendary boxing coach Brendan Ingle, under whose guidance he flourished. Kes, which tells the charming tale of the relationship between Billy Casper and the titular kestrel, is one of the best loved films ever made in Yorkshire. Based on Barry Hines' book, A Kestrel for a Knave, it was released in 1969 and was just the second film Ken Loach had directed. The Full Monty TV reboot, which premiered in June 2023 on Disney+, picked up the story 25 years after a group of unemployed steelworkers famously bared all to make ends meet in the hit film.
