Sheffield animal hospital peaks in prestigious national environmental award

Linnaeus-owned Peak Vets has been accredited as a Silver level practice by Investors in the Environment (iiE).

iiE is a nationwide initiative that encourages firms to transform their working practices to introduce more environmentally friendly, cleaner and sustainable methods and systems.

Among the raft of green activities at the busy veterinary practice has been a staff litter pick in a local park where three full bin liners of rubbish was collected, which team members then separated into recyclable and non-recyclable waste.

There’s also a bee garden at Peak Vets which was planted a couple of years ago but has been added to with a collection of shrubs, herbs and wildflowers. It attracts many pollinators in spring and summer.

The practice has worked to control and reduce waste, together with cutting anaesthetic gases, which fell by 8 per cent from 2021 to 2022. It has also saved on electricity and gas usage.

Additionally, Peak Vets has introduced a boiling water tap to save on electricity and a water distiller to cut down on single-use plastic.

Bethany Allen, registered veterinary nurse and green lead at Peak Vets, said: “Although Peak Vets is getting busier as a practice, we are constantly working on ways to reduce our waste impact on the environment.”

Peak Vets deliver a full primary care service seven days a week, with the practice open until 9pm on weekdays.
