Community run set to support Sheffield schools through 'brilliant, brutal and breathtaking' nature trek

The ‘Cat Lane Canter’ returns for 2026

A community group are hoping to raise money for three local schools with the return of a popular fundraising run.

On Saturday, April 25, the volunteer-led Cat Lane Canter will return in support of three Meersbrook-based schools.

The annual fundraising event will see runners trek through Lees Hall Wood, starting at Newfield Secondary School and ending at Cat Lane.

Runners will be offered 5k, 10k or a ‘fun run for all ages’ options, as organisers hope to raise funds for surrounding schools in the area.

Newfield Secondary School, Carfield Primary School and Meersbrook Bank Primary School will all benefit from the event, with racers asked to pay a £10 entry fee in advance, or £15 on the day - with a £5 offer for under-18s and £2 for the fun run.

Bacon, sausage or vegan sausage sandwiches are also on offer at the end of the race.

Event planner Ricky Charlesworth said: “The course, described as ‘brilliant, brutal, breathtaking’, takes runners along undulating footpaths around the bluebell carpeted woodlands between the Newfield School and Cat Lane. If it’s wet, you will get muddy.

“With roughly 5k and 10k options there’s something for everyone whether you’re looking to complete your first 5k or are a seasoned trail/fell runner looking to take on some exciting terrain without needing to drive out to the Peak District.

“We aim to be a green event so please use public transport, cycle, jog or walk where possible and bring your own reusable bottle.”
