‘Appeared out of nowhere’ - Penny the Peahen takes residence in Hillsborough
Hillsborough might be known for Owls but it’s a different bird that’s capturing interest from locals
Hillsborough has long been famous for its association with owls, but it’s a different bird that’s been capturing the attention of locals around the region in recent weeks.
Penny the Peahen - a female of the peafowl species - was first spotted in the area in late June, and has very much decided to make Hillsborough her new home.

Nicola Cowen, who named the bird, explained: “Penny has been around for about a month now. She appeared out of nowhere.
“A few people from sanctuaries have tried to capture her, but she keeps flying away before anyone can get anywhere near.”

When asked about Penny’s behaviour, Nicola added: “She is a character. She just roams around the street doing her own thing which more often than not involves winding up the cats as they can’t catch her.
“People have been pleased to see her. Many stop to take pictures and post her on Facebook. It’s nice to see around the street.”

The Peahen’s popularity in the area has led to Nicola even starting a Facebook page for people to share their own videos and pictures of Penny and her day-to-day adventures.
