Pictures capture the first few moments of the Sheffield Half Marathon.

Thousands of people took part in this year’s Sheffield Half Marathon, which set off from Arundel Gate at 9.30am today (March 29).

The 13-mile run took them up to the Peak Districts, with a mile-long climb up the steep Ringinglow Road.

Frontrunner Samuel Moakes managed to finish the race in just under one hour and seven minutes, making it back to the city centre before 11am.

Meanwhile fundraising legend John Burkhill took part, setting off towards the end and keeping to the back of the crowd.

He received massive cheers as he crossed the start line, while radio presenters called for people to chuck some money in his famous pram.

At 87 years old, John took three hours and 14 minutes to complete the race - coming 6,317th overall.

We’ve gathered together 17 pictures that show the exhilarating moments at the start of today’s event.
