Chris Wilder hopes Jack O’Connell can step up his return to training and playing in the next couple of weeks after revealing the influential Sheffield United defender is “back on the grass” at the Blades’ Shirecliffe training base.

O’Connell has missed all but the opening few games of the Premier League season after undergoing surgery to correct a troublesome knee injury, and United have struggled in the absence of one of their talismanic players.

Wilder, who revealed that Sander Berge is undergoing specialist treatment on London on his hamstring injury, said: “Jack’s out on the grass, we’re hoping he can step up his return to training and playing in the next couple of weeks.

“We have to clear him so fingers crossed, and the same with Sander. But both attitudes are brilliant, as you assume they will be.”

Midfielder Berge has been missing since he damaged a hamstring against Manchester United earlier the season, also going under the knife.
