A young chef from a South Yorkshire school has won the regional final of a cooking competition.
Dinnington School pupil Ellie-Jae Freeman impressed the judges at Springboard’s FutureChef competition at Sheffield Hallam University.
The 14-year-old’s menu of marinated lamb cutlets in red wine, rosemary and garlic jus served with seasonal vegetables and crushed new potatoes and red berry cheesecake with a fruit coulis was enough to secure her the title.
Ellie-Jae, who gained a place in the regional final and is one step closer to the national finals in London in March, said: “I am so surprised and happy to have won, it has been a fantastic experience.”
FutureChef is a national school cooking programme put together by UK charity Springboard, for young people aged 12 to 16.
Joanne Greenall, the charity’s programmes manager, said: “It inspires students to learn to cook, introduces them and their schools to well respected industry chefs, offers the opportunity to win fantastic prizes and gain anything from a valuable life skill to an informed career path into the UK’s leisure and hospitality industry.”
