The thought of quitting your job in the hope that a casual interest could turn into a new career might sound terrifying or exciting depending on your point of view. Either way, it’s not something that people generally do.

But a man who did that very thing would happily tell you it was worth the risk. With a natural flair for business starting at school when he sold sweets to classmates, 27-year-old Elie Henry may have been destined to become an entrepreneur.

Stuck in a steady but uninspiring IT job, he had watched videos about property investing and liked the idea that it might change his life. He now says that’s exactly what it did after he took a gamble to find out more.

Property investors crash course

Things really started to fall into place for Elie when he paid a modest £1 admission fee to attend a Property Investors Crash Course and listen to an expert in the field.

Now that same course is being held in Bradford for one day only, costing the same price and presented by the same property investment and training expert – Samuel Leeds.

According to Samuel, his former student is one of many who have passed through his training academy and gone on to achieve financial freedom, often after turning up at his crash course first.

Special event

And you can get the lowdown on how they might have done it by signing up to the special West Yorkshire event which takes place on Saturday, October 21.5

As you’d imagine, Elie, who is based in London, can’t recommend the training highly enough but he doesn’t claim it’s the answer to everything. Courage, determination and a hands-on approach have played a big part for him too.

While employed in IT Elie knew he lacked the ambition to progress after seeing promoted colleagues become stretched for time and all-consumed by work. It wasn’t the life he wanted so he set out to change things.

Training academy

Soon after attending the one-day course, he took out a loan to pay for the year-long academy training feeling reassured by Samuel’s story of his own early and ongoing success.

He recalls: “I thought I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m going to take the risk. I’m going to bet on myself. I’m going to make the plan work.”

In another decisive move, Elie left his flat for a bigger property and set about renovating the apartment to use as serviced accommodation for he and his partner to manage.

Support from mentors

Being new to the industry he made the most of the support available from the academy’s experienced mentors and his confidence grew when the revamped flat was booked within a day of being advertised.

Believing that property deals were the best way forward, Elie gave up his job, unbeknown to friends and family, and saw the gamble pay off when he clinched his first deal.

Since then he has become a full-time property entrepreneur operating in London and Hartlepool. He now works closely with a local builder to find the right properties to work on and generally sells two deals a month using Samuel’s buy, refurbish and refinance approach.

Self-belief is key

“When I’m quoting work for my builder, he can tell me if a street is bad. You want to avoid that because when you’re packaging and selling to an investor you don’t want a problem when they have the property,” he explains.

Elie’s other pieces of advice to would-be investors are to believe in yourself and to realise that using the skills you have will generate an income.

Samuel says he’s looking forward to following his former student’s progress. “I’m so proud of Elie’s success and happy to see him growing. He’s got a nice portfolio and he’s building a great brand in the property community,” he adds.
