University pressed to act over paying ‘living wage’

A senior Labour councillor has called for Sheffield University to follow the city council’s lead and pay its workers the ‘living wage’.

Coun Ben Curran, cabinet member for finance and resources, oversaw the authority’s adoption of the policy last year – which gives workers a minimum of £7.65, as opposed to £6.31 on the minimum wage.

He was speaking at a meeting of trade unionists and activists campaigning for a change to be made and follows lobbying by the council of businesses across the city pressing them to follow its lead.
