TSB announced on 30 September that it would be closing 164 of its branches, prompting a loss of over 900 jobs.

The bank said that it was not an “easy decision”, and that the branches with the lowest levels of footfall would be closed.

Why is TSB closing branches?

According to TSB, the closures have been driven by a “significant shift in customer behaviour”, including a reduction in the number of customers using branches and a significant increase in those using digital banking.

Debbie Crosbie, Chief Executive of TSB, said, “Closing any of our branches is never an easy decision, but our customers are banking differently - with a marked shift to digital banking.

“We are reshaping our business to transform the customer experience and set us up for the future. This means having the right balance between branches on the high street and our digital platforms, enabling us to offer the very best experience for our personal and business customers across the UK.”

The branches that have been earmarked for closure were selected to ensure that 94 per cent of TSB customers can still reach a TSB branch in 20 minutes or less.

TSB says it will also be introducing 100 mobile advisors to provide additional support to some communities where branches are closing.

“In addition, TSB is further enhancing its partnership with the Post Office including adding the ability to deposit and withdraw cash using a card, for both business and personal customers, and collect coin change from pre-agreed locations,” TSB explained.

What will happen to staff?

It has been revealed by the bank that there will be a total of 969 role reductions, with 120 new operation roles created. Where possible, role reductions will arise through voluntary redundancy.

In a statement, TSB said, “TSB is implementing a comprehensive training programme to support those leaving the business to find future roles.”
