The removal of lockdown restrictions after December 2 means that Small Business Saturday UK on December 5 will be the first of three Saturdays to champion local shops within our communities.

Now in its eighth year, Small Business Saturday UK last year saw an estimated £800 million spent in small businesses by a record 17.6 million customers.

The initiative is being backed by the business community in Sheffield, with the city’s reputation as a hotspot for small, independent businesses a major factor in this support.

Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager said that after a tough year, it was ‘really great’ that so many of the city’s businesses had been able to reopen just in time for Christmas.

She said: “Now more than ever we need the people of Sheffield to support their local shops and services. The large multiples often have the support of a network of branches and central functions.

“For our family owned and entrepreneurial independents, it’s the business owners who have to use their own personal finances and ingenuity to stay in business. The local high street is already a tough trading place for small businesses, compounded by the rise in online shopping and now a global pandemic.

“We need to remember our independent businesses are the backbone of our local economy. They give Sheffield its unique character, they are more invested in Sheffield’s welfare and future. And a marketplace made up of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation.

“Small Business Saturday is a time to celebrate our independent traders. We urge residents to think about their purchasing choices in the days and months ahead to help ensure our local businesses stay in business. Remember, shop safely and please shop local.”

Small Business Saturday Director Michelle Ovens added : “This crisis has brought home just how much small firms are at the heart of our communities.

"It’s vital we continue to support small businesses as this crisis continues, which is why we are determined to make this year’s campaign the most impactful ever.”
