It’s an event that should demonstrate the pulling power of the Tour de France.

A two-day show will be held in Sheffield featuring up to 100 bosses who have travelled to the city to do business – and watch a little cycling.

The Sport Technologies matchmaking event offers local firms the chance to arrange one-to-one 30-minute meetings with an array of foreign companies, without leaving home.

The focus is on equipment, advanced materials, ICT, health testing, rehabilitation, simulations, nutrition, clothing and footwear.

It is part of the International Business Festival, one of the activities to celebrate le Tour in South Yorkshire and is organised by Enterprise Europe Network, funded by the European Commission.

Leo Donato works for RTC North which runs activites in Yorkshire for EEN – “an Italian guy in Yorkshire trying to promote a French event overseas.”

He said: “It’s the easiest way to open the door to European trade and it’s free.

“We have got this huge room with exhibits and tables where people can talk. It will be fun.

“I have been to 20 brokerage events now and in my experience about 10 per cent of meetings result in business.

“But networking like this also opens up new ideas and new contacts which could be useful in the future.”

EEN has links with agencies all over Europe – such as Invest in Ireland, Inno Norway and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency – and they will be contacting members urging them to attend, he added.

Leo added: “The first step is to go to the website and register and from mid June local companies can request meetings with foreign attendees. The agenda will be issued at the end of June.”

The Sport Technologies brokerage event is on July 3 and 4 at the English Institute of Sport.
