Richard Edwards told the audience at the Cutlers’ Feast, which included Business Secretary Greg Clark, that critical scrutiny of the Brexit negotiations will still be required by Parliament.

In his speech, Mr Edwards added: “Manufacturing is one of the jewels in the national economy. You will be aware that Brexit gives us some cause for concern.

“Tariffs and border bureaucracy could potentially be very damaging to us and the national economy.”

Mr Edwards added: “There is currently a feeling that political ideology might trump pragmatism in the negotiations, and run counter to the best interests of the nation.

“In addition, I along with many others, have been irritated by some of the arrogant pronouncements by senior people in the EU on Brexit, but I would urge you to take back the message that we need the Prime Minister to cut through that, and through ideological pressures, so that we get the best possible deal for the UK.”

Mr Clark said the work of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership was exemplary, and the city region’s enterprise zone is one of the most successful in the country.

He added: “Innovation in manufacturing attracts creative people and companies in all areas. A region on the rise – as this one so clearly is – is a magnet for the talented and the capable.”
