A popular hair salon at Meadowhall in Sheffield has closed suddenly, just two weeks before Christmas.

Regis’ Meadowhall store was among a number of branches across the UK to close yesterday, Monday, December 9, weeks after the owner Regis UK went into administration.

One employee claimed staff at the branch – where nine people worked, some having done so for more than 25 years – were only told that morning of the closure.

He said the Doncaster branch was among the others to close.

Regis UK, which also owns Supercuts, went into administration in October, putting 1,200 jobs across the country at risk, but the administrator Deloitte said at the time that the salons would remain open while a buyer was sought.

Matthew Gee said staff at the Meadowhall branch had been assured back then that they were unlikely to be affected, with the Supercuts branches more likely to close, and if their branch did go they would be able to transfer to one of Regis’ other salons.

But the 33-year-old, of Abbeydale Road, in Sheffield, said he and fellow employees had been given no notice of the closure, offered no alternative employment and told to apply to the Government for redundancy.

“Many people were told if any salons closed it wouldn’t be ours but they’ve closed 33 branches, including this one,” he said.

“They came in yesterday morning and told us to get our stuff and go. We had clients booked and everything.

“Everyone’s been working here a long time, and some have been here more than 25 years, but no one’s been offered the chance to transfer to another salon.

“They just offered us redundancy, which we were told we have to claim through the Government.

“We were all really shocked and a lot of people have been let down.”

The Star has contacted Regis UK and Deloitte, and is waiting for a response.
