Apprentices from South Yorkshire engineering firms could start training in Spain on a regular basis after Brinsworth Academy of Engineering played host to two professors from a Spanish vocational college.

The academics, from the Vicente Blasco Ibanez College in Valencia, visited Rotherham-based Brinsworth, other training providers and local engineering firms after one of their students trained in Sheffield as part of a successful pilot programme.

The plan now is to strengthen links with further exchange visits for apprentices from South Yorkshire and Valencia.

After the visit, Prof Laura Alfonso said: “These meetings were held to strengthen and make contact with new companies. Brinsworth Academy of Engineering is one of the leading vocational training providers in the UK for engineering and will pilot an apprenticeship exchange between Sheffield and Valencia which is being planned to be carried out in 2014.”

Brinsworth’s business development director, Paul Reeves, said: “The main purpose for hosting this visit was to facilitate new opportunities for our apprentices to train in Europe.”
