South Yorkshire benefit claimants are among the most entrepreneurial in Britain, according to new figures.
The government’s New Enterprise Allowance, which helps job seekers set up their own business, has helped create 970 start-ups Sheffield and 570 in Doncaster.
Sheffield is third on the list of top areas for NEA start-ups, while Doncaster is tenth.
Esther McVey, employment minister, said: “Small businesses are what make this country great – with their hard work, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit they are fuelling Britain’s recovery. They are also providing a significant share of new vacancies, contributing to the record number of people who now have jobs.”
