South Yorkshire building materials firm borrows £5m to survive the pandemic and grow

A Barnsley construction materials manufacturer has secured a £5m funding package to help it survive the pandemic and grow.

Naylor Industries has secured £3m of asset finance to increase capacity and productivity two of its businesses.

Some £2m will be spent on machinery at its Barugh Green concrete lintel factory. And a £1m will go on new equipment at its Wombwell business to boost production of ventilation duct products. The project is also being supported by a Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership business productivity grant worth £100,000.

The firm has also negotiated a £2m overdraft for expansion and to cover Covid-19 issues.

Chief executive Edward Naylor said: “At times like this, we’re pleased to have a broad portfolio of activities in the business. Whilst there is still considerable uncertainty in our core construction markets, we see opportunities for growth in our other markets.”

Naylor Industries is a fourth generation manufacturing business employing 400 across five manufacturing sites: three in the Barnsley area, one in Fife and one in the Midlands.

It makes clay and plastic pipes and concrete products. It recently launched Naylor Specialist Plastics which manufactures tubes and profiles.

And it makes ‘agility tunnels’ for dogs, commonly seen at shows such as Crufts. The company makes them in lengths of up to 18ft and three weights.

The structure is spring wire coils covered by PVC. They come in different colours and concertina down for storage.

Annual turnover is £55m.
