BARNSLEY councillors met teachers and students at Darton College as part of investigations into whether the town’s schools are providing young people with the job skills they need.

A probe has been launched into how effectively the town’s requirements are being met by schools in the light of the big economic challenges it faces.

Councillors believe more will have to be done to make sure local people have the skills needed to get jobs and make Barnsley an attractive place for new employers.

At Darton they questioned senior teaching staff and students about the preparation that goes into making sure that students are ready for the world of work, whether they leave school at 16 or further or higher education in later years.
