SHEFFIELD Arena brings over £20 million a year into the city’s economy

The Motorpoint Arena generated £20.8m of spending through staging music, comedy and sporting events, according to research commissioned by Sheffield International Venues, which runs it.

Robbie Williams, One Direction and Rihanna are among the stars to have staged concerts at the venue, which is now vying for the biggest names against the new Leeds Arena, which has already secured gigs by Bruce Springsteen and Sir Elton John.

Steve Brailey, chief executive of SIV, said: “One of our key objectives is to maximise the economic impact of the Sheffield city region and these latest figures show we are achieving exactly that.

“Bringing money into the city through development of the venue, events and employment opportunities has not only contributed to the regeneration of the Don Valley area itself, but has continued to help put the Sheffield city region on the world map.

“It highlights the venue’s position as the region’s premier entertainment venue.”

Ian Slater, chairman of Hospitality Sheffield and manager of The Park Inn hotel, said: “The Arena has a significant impact on hotel occupancy. It provides an increased choice and availability of events in Sheffield and increases both the national and international profile of the city.”
