Sheffield student’s doorbell has sound of success

A Sheffield Hallam University student has won a top summer internship after designing a possible doorbell of the future.

Daniel McGrane, 23, who is in the third year of a business and enterprise management course, will be working for Sharp Laboratories in Oxford.

Daniel has designed SmartBell, which allows people to view and communicate with a visitor at their door via a mobile phone app, whether they are at home, at work or on holiday.

His design beat 20 shortlisted entries in Sharp’s annual internship competition.

SmartBell is designed to increase home security and allow people to speak to visitors when they aren’t present, such as couriers and delivery people.

It would notify your mobile phone when there is someone at the door, allowing you to see who is there, have a video call or play a pre-recorded message.

Daniel said: “I got tired of being moaned at by family members when not answering the door to receive their parcels so I thought about a range of possible solutions. A bell that sends notifications to a phone was my first idea, and the idea to be able to video call whoever is at your door followed.”
