Sheffield streets miss out on competition

Two Sheffield bids to be named ‘high street of the year’ have not been successful.

Independent traders on Sharrowvale Road, and the Attercliffe Town Team, entered the Great British High Street Awards.

The prize was £50,000.

Nick Peck, of Porter Brook Deli on Sharrowvale Road, said it was a ‘real shame’.

He added: “It is the first time we’ve done this sort of thing. If there is anything similar then we will look at it.

“We are all independents but the judges are all from big chains.

“It felt like what they were really after was to have a town team leading the bids.”

The closest town to make the shortlist was Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, which featuerd in the market town category.
