A rail union has declared a day of action against cuts today in protest against old train stock being ‘dumped’ up north.
The RMT union says plans for old London tube trains to be used as carriages on railways in the north ‘raises serious safety fears’.
The union will meet outside Sheffield Railway Station and demonstrate between 2pm and 4pm today.
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “In New York they are dumping clapped out subway trains in the sea. In Britain they are threatening to dump them on the railways of the North.
“While George Osborne has been spouting a stream of rhetoric about a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ the real truth is that the whole region can expect sub-standard, bodged-up services for many years to come.”
