Sheffield is believed to be the first major UK city to announce alternative plans as concerns about COVID-19 grow.

A Sheffield Property Association spokesman said: “We’re keen to ensure the opportunity of this week is not wasted. So the S-PA has announced a week of pop-up events in Sheffield, running 9-12 March.

If the typical routes for networking are unavailable this spring, it could undeniably have a detrimental effect on growth to major cities and key programmes over the next 12 months.

“Sheffield is probably still an overlooked gem, so we want to explore ways the property and investment community can share insights and build relationships without the complications of global travel.

“Sheffield is a city that thinks differently, so for those who don’t want to travel for personal, health, environmental or social reasons, we will be organising a week of events that will be broadcast around the world.

“This is a virtual invitation to what will be a thought-provoking series of events, debates and showcases that you can enjoy – be it in person or remotely.”

MIPIM is organised by Reed MIDEM.

Chief executive, Paul Zilk, said the well-being of clients and staff were their priority.

He added: “Given the evolving context, the best course of action is to postpone MIPIM to June. This is not a decision we have taken lightly. We believe these new dates will provide the international MIPIM community with the opportunity to achieve their business objectives.
