The Devonshire Quarter in Sheffield city centre narrowly missed out on the title of ‘best neighbourhood’ at an awards ceremony.

The quarter was shortlisted along with Hulme in Manchester and the winner, Hastings’ Old Town, at the 2016 Urbanism Awards.

The prize is one of five given out annually by The Academy of Urbanism, and votes are cast by its members, including architects, planners and developers.

Judges praised the way the area has been transformed though intervention by the council, as well as the active participation of residents and ‘city ambassadors’.

Lead assessor Richard Guise said: “The outcome is an area that is alive both by day and night and is home to quirky, independent shops and nascent creative industries.”
