A cinema group whose radical new approach has wowed audiences in Europe is to run the new cinema to be built on The Moor.

The nine-screen Light Cinema will open by early 2016 as part of a retail and leisure development that will include a Primark, four additional shops, and seven restaurants alongside the current Debenhams store.

Light Cinemas aims to provide a different experience for audiences to the multiplexes that have dominated in recent years, screening live arts and sports broadcasts appealing to a wider, multi-generational audience, as well as films.

Light Cinemas’ Phil Dove said: “We don’t have a standard formula. We work with the community to create something unique that they own and love.

“We always include a range of food and beverage offers catering for a wide range of tastes that will attract local people, whether or not they want to see a movie.

“That’s the secret of our success.”

The Light has a reputation for attracting quality food outlets to developments incorporating its cinemas, and Ashcroft, who are managing The Moor development for investors Scottish Widows Investment Property Partnership Trust, are already talking to potential operators.

Ashcroft director Ranald Philips said: “We have already seen prime retailers such as Primark and TJ Hughes sharing our confidence in The Moor as the only retail location in Sheffield that can currently offer the quality of floor space and environment they require in today’s market.

“Now we are delighted to welcome a dynamic cinema operator to drive the leisure element of our investment plans.”

Sheffield Council cabinet member Coun Leigh Bramall said: “The new development will help to make The Moor and the city centre increasingly vibrant. It shows that the city centre is starting to move forward and confidence is returning.”
