Another independent business frequently recommended by readers was Atkinsons Independent Department Store, a 2-storey, family-owned shop located on The Moor.
Originally opened by John Atkinson in 1872, the store built a shining reputation by offering high-quality products and customer service at a great value for money. These are traits Atkinson Department Store continues to strive for over 150 years later.

Atkinsons Department Store started as a small drapery shop ‘specialising in hosiery, ribbon and lace’ but now provides modern shoppers with a range of clothing, beauty products, homewares, furniture, appliances and gifts.
It is now the only department store left in Sheffield and with its prominent location in Sheffield’s city centre, it is easy to see why many consider Atkinsons Independent Department Store to be a landmark of Sheffield’s shopping district.
Heather Tingle said: “Atkinsons Department Store surely deserves a mention!”

The Vintage Tea Room is also available for private event hire.

Also proving to be a favourite among readers is Off The Canvas, an art cafe and splatter room that opened last year which offers a variety of arts and crafts in the city centre.
Visitors at Off The Canvas can order from the ‘art menu’ or purchase tickets to special events in advance. Upcoming events include Bottomless Sip & Paints, Late Night Cafe sessions and Student Socials.
