Sheffield engineer buys hydraulics specialist after Tottenham Hotspur retractable pitch triumph
A Sheffield engineering company has snapped up the hydraulics firm it worked with on the world’s first retractable football pitch at Tottenham Hotspur FC’s stadium in London.
SCX, which employs 65 at Roman Road, Wincobank, has purchased 25-strong Denley Hydraulics of Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire.
The firms collaborated on the 9,000 tonne pitch at Spurs which slides under the South Stand to reveal an NFL American football field, in 25 minutes.
SCX executive chairman, Steve Henning, said: “During our collaboration with Denley on the Tottenham Hotspur retractable pitch project, we were very impressed by the company’s quality and capabilities, as well as the skills and experience of its team. Denley has a strong presence in the nuclear, renewable energy, oil and gas, flood defence and bridge sectors.”
SCX also built retractable roofs for Centre Court and No. 1 Court at Wimbledon. It has also supplied cranes and hoists for the UK nuclear decommissioning program, Rolls-Royce, BAE and Bombardier.
