The dairy farmer behind Sheffield’s popular ice cream brand Our Cow Molly brand has won a prestigious title.
Eddie Andrew, owner of Cliffe House dairy farm, Dungworth, scooped an award for the way the business educates the public about the journey of food from field to folk.
Mr Andrew beat competition from six finalists to win the Farmer of the Year award, at The Great Yorkshire Show this week.
His farm is the only dairy farm in Sheffield that still bottles its own milk.
Faced with production price pressure on his business, Mr Andrew started engaging with the people of Sheffield by creating the light-hearted Our Cow Molly brand which emphasised his product’s local credentials. It proved popular and Mr Andrew now welcomes the public onto his farm to his ice cream parlour. He also has more than 10,000 Twitter followers and hosts school trips.
He helped set up and run a monthly farmers’ market in his local village hall and on Open Farm Sunday, together with four other farmers, he welcomed 4,0000 visitors onto his farm.
Mr Andrew has also pounded the city streets with the National Farmers Union to talk about the qualities of dairy products with the public.
His parents, Thelma and Graham, collected the award at the President’s Lawn at the Harrogate showground in North Yorkshire, where the show is taking place.
Speaking later, Mr Andrew said: “Ninety-nine per cent of the public buy their milk from the supermarket and they’re missing out on how that product is created.
“Once we share that experience with them, they realise all the hard work that is involved.”
Organised each year by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, the three-day Great Yorkshire Show is one the biggest agricultural shows in the country.
Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to have visited the show, now in its 157th year, which features thousands of the county’s finest livestock, alongside exhibitions, demonstrations and fashion shows.
The farmer of the year award is a new award set up by The Star’s sister title, The Yorkshire Post.
