Motorists are being warned of roadworks affecting the A628 Woodhead Pass – which will close four nights a week for more than a fortnight.

Resurfacing on the trans- Pennine route will affect the stretch across the moors between Flouch Roundabout and the Gunn Inn crossroads, at Tintwistle.

Work will be carried out between next Monday and Wednesday, September 18.

The Highways Agency will be carrying out work overnight between 8pm and 6am, on Monday to Thursday evenings only.

Sections of the road will be resurfaced and roadside marker posts will be replaced.

During the work, it will be necessary to close the A628 east and westbound overnight between the Flouch Roundabout and the Gunn Inn crossroads, during which ‘clearly signed diversion routes’ will be in place.

Tim Calvert, Highways Agency project manager, said: “This work will provide an improved road surface for drivers.

“For the safety of road users and road workers, we encourage all drivers to drive carefully along the diversion routes.

“Drivers should also keep within the speed limit, and concentrate on the road ahead.”

Eastbound traffic will be diverted off the A628 at the Gunn Inn junction on to the A57 through Glossop and continuing along the A57 Snake Pass to Sheffield.

Most westbound traffic will be advised of the closure via signs on the M1 and advised to continue north to the M62.

Non-motorway westbound traffic is being diverted from Flouch roundabout via Holmfirth and Stalybridge.

Drivers are being told to allow extra time for their journeys when the road is closed.
