Setting up or acquiring a business abroad opens up a whole raft of opportunities – but there can be pitfalls too.

In a bid to explore the challenges and smooth the way for local firms, Finch Insurance Brokers is joining forces with The Star’s business publications to stage a special Round Table.

The event, which takes place towards the end of the month at Finch’s offices at the Sheffield Business Centre, will involve a panel of leaders from local businesses that either have or are setting up operations abroad and experts on international law, taxation, risk management and cultural awareness.

Chris Finch, head of Finch Insurance Brokers’ Sheffield office, said: “Having a physical presence in foreign markets can bring all sorts of advantages, including tax benefits and increased acceptance by potential customers.

“However, there are all sorts of issues which can easily be overlooked and can pose potential problems.

“We hope that by joining forces with The Star and calling on the expertise of local business leaders and professional advisers we can help to demystify the process and encourage more local firms to expand abroad.”

Edited highlights of the round table discussion, chaired by Star Industrial Editor Bob Rae, will appear in The Star’s Business Monthly magazine and as a video and text on The Star’s website:
