Rail firms on right track for satisfaction

SOUTH Yorkshire main line rail companies East Midlands Trains and East Coast have come joint second in a national passenger satisfaction survey.

The firms scored 87 per cent for overall passenger satisfaction - two per cent behind top-rated Virgin Trains, which runs services from London to the north west.

First TransPennine Express scored 84 per cent, Northern 83 per cent and Cross Country 82 per cent.

But the best scores were for two smaller operators which run a handful of services from Doncaster to London, Grand Central, which scored 95 per cent, and Hull Trains, with 88 per cent.

The results were published by rail watchdog Passenger Focus after a survey of thousands of passengers last autumn. Sheffield to London operator East Midlands Trains’ satisfaction rating improved across 24 different categories with notable increases in approval of stations and trains, which are being revamped at a cost of £40 million.

Ratings for on train facilities such as toilets and comfort of seats have also improved, plus cleanliness of stations and trains.
