Store group John Lewis has bounced back, boosting profits by almost 60 per cent to £144.5 million after sales rose by £354 million to £4.4 billion.

Chairman Charlie Mayfield put the success down to more favourable conditions created in the run-up to a number of one-off events, including the Diamond Jubilee, Olympics and Paralympics; the performance of the group’s trading teams and an acceleration in sales and profits from online operations.
