FORMER Peak District environmental training centre Losehill Hall has been reopened by the Youth Hostel Association after a £2 million refurbishment.

The facility was closed controversially by the Peak District National Park with the loss of 40 jobs to save money and because the authority could not afford a revamp of the building.

The Grade II listed Victorian Gothic mansion was purchased from the national park authority at a below market value price.

It now offers 144-beds of residential accommodation, to replace the old Youth Hostel in Castleton village, and also houses the Peak District’s learning and discovery team which provides educational work for young people.

Up to 22,000 people are expected to use Losehill Hall each year.
