‘Careful’ consideration has been urged about the types of shops in Sheffield’s planned Sevenstone development after a study forecast a shrinking British high street.
The Centre for Retail Research warned one fifth of shops across the country could fold in the next five years, with the loss of 316,000 jobs.
Meanwhile, online shopping is expected to surge, accounting for 22 per cent of retail spending by 2018 compared to 12.7 per cent now.
Sevenstone will not open until at least 2016 - and only then if work starts next year.
Richard Wright, executive director of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, said: “There needs to be a very careful look at what will be provided through Sevenstone rather than simply going ahead with the original scheme. Attention needs to focus on what customers want in the future. The type of stores needed is likely to change.”
