Age Active has a packed schedule of sessions for those who believe 60 is the new 40. But as well as boosting health, the charity believes it is helping to combat loneliness, which is rising among older people. And it has even helped some find love, hosting four weddings of members who met there.

Founded in 1992, it has helped more than 200,000 over-50s get active. The pay-as-you-go club is run by Suzanne Duraid, David Schofield, and Dennis Dryden and based at Victoria Hall on Chapel Walk in Sheffield city centre.

Founder Suzanne said: "We get lots of newcomers who struggle to pluck up the courage to attend their first fitness class, but our community is so supportive and inclusive.

“We're a huge family, and many of our members meet up for coffee after classes, with some even forming close relationships. Our classes offer a community feeling, which you can't get in a gym."

Member Kath Watson added: "The big benefit for me has been socialising, getting out of the house, otherwise you can get stuck. Before I found Age Active, I would rarely see anyone throughout the week.”

Inclusion is a big part of the attraction, according to fitness instructor David Schofield.

“Sometimes, gym staff aren't trained to work with older people, that's why we offer as many classes as we can from Zumba to sequence dancing to Tai Chi.”
