The ibis Budget hotel on the inner ring road at St Mary’s Gate, beside the 22-storey Veolcity Tower block, is due to open in early March.

The 126-bed hotel will include an ‘artisan-style’ cafe called Chill, selling ‘barista-prepared speciality coffee, cooked-to-order pizza and a selection of savoury and sweet bites’, along with a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Plans for the seven-storey hotel were approved in summer 2018 and it was initially scheduled to open in December 2019.

Proposals for an 18-storey block of student flats at the site were previously given the go-ahead but building never began.

Described as an ‘economy hotel’, it is at the opposite end of the market from the four-star former Hilton hotel at Victoria Quays, which closed before Christmas but is due to reopen in February as the Quays Hotel.
