A question mark hangs over a landmark building in Rotherham town centre after it was bought by a developer.

The imposing 1930s Howard Building on Howard Street, once an art college, was snapped up by a developer for more than £300,000 prior to going under the hammer.

A spokesman for auctioneers Mark Jenkinson & Son said: “There was significant interest and a sale was made with one of the bidders, a developer.”

Rotherham College of Arts and Technology originally put the four-storey building up for sale in 2012 with Rotherham Council acting as marketing agents, but there had been no takers. It has stood empty since September 2012.
